TomTom RoadCheck helps automakers to decide safe automated driving conditions

To decide when automated driving functions can be activated is a critical industry challenge as safe automated driving is not possible all the time, specially during periods of adverse weather, in tunnels, and in changing environments, such as during roadworks.

In this line, TomTom, a location technology company, has launched TomTom RoadCheck, a product for automated vehicles that allows carmakers to decide where it is safe for drivers to activate their vehicles’ automated driving functions. It is a tool for automakers to determine when, where and under what conditions their vehicles can safely activate automated driving functions.

RoadCheck enables carmakers to use TomTom’s high definition (HD) map data to define the exhaustive list of conditions under which their automated vehicle can safely operate, referred to as the operational design domain (ODD). RoadCheck is designed to overcome the challenge of managing the ODD, ultimately making roads safer for all drivers.

TomTom’s vehicle automation portfolio now features: the HD Map, the ADAS Map, a hazard service, AutoStream, Vehicle Horizon and RoadCheck. The company claims with the addition of RoadCheck, it now offers carmakers a complete mapping service for safe automated driving.

The product will also be deployed in a production model by a leading global carmaker in 2021, starting in the United States.
