Millbrook officially opens its simulation suite

Millbrook vehicle testing centre has launched its simulation suite as part of the 5G testbed. The simulation environment is an integrated Vehicle-in-the-Loop (VIL) ecosystem which combines Millbrook’s virtual proving ground with detailed vehicle modelling software.

Vehicle-in-the-Loop (VIL)

VIL, according to IEEE, combines the advantages of driving simulators and a real test vehicle by incorporating it into a traffic simulation. While driving, the synthetic outside traffic is visualized to the driver realistically by means of an optical see through head mounted display. With the help of sensor models, driver assistance functions can react to synthetic outside traffic already in an early phase of development, and the function can thus be tested realistically and without danger for humans and machine.

Support to vehicle development

This enables Millbrook to support customers’ vehicle development within virtual and blended environments. The simulator can be used for designing, developing and testing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), and conventional vehicles.

It can also be used to determine vehicle road safety, develop artificial intelligence, test infotainment packages and validate intelligent energy systems on electric powertrains for battery and thermal management.

The digital twin of its proving ground provides simulations of vehicle dynamics, terrain, traffic, sensors, networks and connectivity. It uses real radar and camera sensors, or complete on-board sensors with static vehicles.

5G capability of the testing centre provides connectivity on-site and allows manufacturers to measure vehicle performance in a more controlled, simulated environment, before heading out on test tracks. Actual track results can be replayed via the simulator and weather and traffic can be safely changed, while users interact with real sensors.
