Via and Hyundai-Aptiv plan to launch Robotaxis

The Hyundai-Aptiv joint venture,Motional and Shuttle startup Via may launch a shared robotaxi service for the public in a U.S. city in the first half of 2021, according to some news reports.

Motional is an autonomous driving joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv. The JV is working on developing and commercializing SAE Level 4 vehicles – autonomous vehicles.The company will begin testing fully driverless systems in 2020, and plans to make available its driverless systems and supporting technology for robotaxi providers and fleet operators in 2022.

The company is based in Boston, with teams in Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Santa Monica, Singapore, and Seoul.  The newest office, Seoul, will serve as a key technology hub and testing location.  Motional’s team is expanding quickly.

Via is a re-engineering public transit company that develops and provides on-demand public mobility solutions for commuters. The reports mention that under the partnership, Motional’s autonomous automobiles will be linked with Via’s platform, that will handle reserving, routing, passenger and automobile task and identification, fleet administration etc.
